Peroneal Tendonitis

More than just a sprain

Peroneal tendonitis is inflammation in one or both of the tendons that connect your lower leg to your foot. It’s usually due to overusing the tendons, but it can also be the result of a sudden injury such as an ankle sprain. Peroneal tendonitis can be painful and make it hard to walk. If the condition is left untreated, it can lead to long-term disability.

Peroneal tendonitis is a common injury in runners, dancers, and other athletes who put a lot of stress on their lower limbs. The condition is also seen in people who wear high heels or ill-fitting shoes. It is more common in women than in men.

The peroneal tendons are located on the outside of your ankle How much tomorrow. They attach the muscles that help stabilize your ankle and foot to the bones in your lower leg. These tendons help you point your foot downward and turn your foot outward.

Peroneal tendonitis is usually the result of overuse. The tendons can become inflamed and irritated from repetitive motion or from wearing shoes that rub against the tendons. A sudden injury, such as an ankle sprain, can also lead to peroneal tendonitis or a longitudinal tendon tear.

  • Pain and tenderness on the outside of the ankle
