J- Wire Technique for Fixation of the Akin Osteotomy

In 1925 Akin described hallux valgus as a deflection of the great toe toward the other toes accompanied by a varying about more exostosis at the terminal end of the metatarsal and the proximal end of the first phalanx. Although his advocation of manipulating less severe hallux valgus deformities into correction may have been a bit nearsighted, his surgical approach of addressing abductus deformities within the hallux remains widely recognized and used by podiatric surgeons.
